THE SHORT ANSWER

I don’t use AI to create my work, and I never will.

THE LONG ANSWER

Generative AI (whether in the form of large language models or image generators) are created by stealing from artists and writers such as myself. The output of generative AI is soulless and soul-destroying, and will remain that way no matter how technically proficient it might become.

As such, I have never used it, and commit to never using it in the future.

I do not (and will not) use AI to help me with any stage of my writing process, be that drafting, writing, editing or proofreading. I only engage people to help me with my writing, such as editors or proofreaders, who make similar commitments. At no point will I willingly feed my writing into an AI.

I do not (and will not) use AI to generate covers for my books. I only engage artists who commit to not using AI, and I will ensure that part of my contract with them is that they must show proof of this; they must be able to produce work-in-progress on demand, including evidence of drafting and layering. They must be able to make small tweaks to finished artwork on request.

I do not (and will not) use AI to help me design my website or write blog posts, nor to format or market my work in any way.

I find a great deal of personal satisfaction in the act of creation, and I have no desire to outsource any part of that to a machine. I also cannot understand how I could ask people to support my work if I cannot be bothered to put the effort in to create something worth supporting.

A machine may string some words together into a coherent sentence and maybe even a narrative, but only in the same way that my cat may walk through some paint and then across a sheet of paper. There is no intention behind the result, and no meaning that can be deduced from it.

The entirety of my creative output is free from AI at every stage of the process.
